Extra! Extra! Read All About It — Newsies JR Hits the Stage!
Based on the explosive real-life events of the 1899 Newsboys Strike in New York City, Newsies is a Tony Award-winning Broadway hit and beloved Disney film. With a soaring score by Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by Jack Feldman, the original show earned 8 Tony nominations, winning Best Original Score and Best Choreography.
In the summer of 1899, hundreds of young newspaper sellers—many orphaned or homeless—banded together to strike against powerful publishers like Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, who raised distribution prices at the newsies’ expense. Their bold stand sparked headlines of its own, capturing the nation’s attention and becoming a landmark moment in the history of youth-led labour movements.
Newsies JR follows charismatic Jack Kelly and his fellow "newsies" as they rise up to demand fairness, unity, and a voice. With timeless themes of justice and resilience, the story is as inspiring today as it was over a century ago.
An incredibly talented cast of young performers — the best of Northern Ireland’s budding musical theatre, dance, and singing talent — will take to the stage for the Northern Ireland Musical Theatre Collective’s debut production.
Show duration 90 mins.
Please note seating is unallocated for this event.
