KANNAKI: The Eternal Flame - A Dance Drama
A Timeless Saga of Women’s Empowerment, Justice, and Resilience
Kannaki: The Eternal Flame is a powerful dance drama inspired by the classical Tamil epic Silappathikaram, reimagined through a contemporary, cross-cultural artistic lens. Developed as part of a 24-week arts programme and presented at the Island Arts Centre, the production brings together Indian classical dance traditions and modern ballet to create a visually rich and emotionally compelling performance.
The narrative follows the legendary journey of Kannaki-a symbol of unwavering love, courage, and justice. Through expressive movement, music, and theatrical storytelling, the dance drama traces her transformation from a devoted wife to a fearless voice of truth, challenging injustice and emerging as an eternal symbol of women’s strength and resilience.
The choreography seamlessly blends classical forms such as Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam with contemporary dance vocabulary, reflecting a dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity. The ensemble cast-comprising migrant artists, young learners, and experienced performers-brings depth, diversity, and authenticity to the stage, embodying the spirit of cultural dialogue and shared expression.
Structured through a series of evocative scenes, the performance journeys through love, betrayal, loss, and ultimately, justice-inviting audiences to reflect on timeless human values alongside pressing contemporary social realities.
More than a performance, Kannaki: The Eternal Flame is a celebration of inclusivity, artistic collaboration, and cultural heritage. It serves as a creative platform that bridges generations and communities, fostering understanding, empowerment, and unity through the universal language of dance.
Aligned with global priorities such as gender equality, reduced inequalities, and the promotion of justice and inclusive societies, this dance drama aspires to leave a lasting emotional and cultural impact-igniting the eternal flame of resilience and truth in every audience member.
